Smarter Solar Façades: How Computational Design Is Powering BIPV Innovation
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are transforming how we think about architecture—turning facades, roofs, and skylights into active energy systems. Instead of adding solar panels as an afterthought, BIPV integrates them directly into the building envelope. This approach blends aesthetics and performance, offering a more seamless, sustainable solution for modern buildings.
This research explores how computational design tools can support the development of BIPV facades. In collaboration with a leading manufacturer of thin-film solar panels, the project focuses on automating the layout and design of PV modules on building skins. The aim is to help design teams balance multiple project demands—energy performance, architectural vision, structural needs, and budget constraints.
By introducing algorithmic strategies, generative design, and machine learning, we unlock faster, smarter workflows. Instead of spending weeks refining a single design iteration, designers can now explore a wide range of options—evaluated through performance criteria—within minutes.
This research marks a step toward developing custom digital tools for BIPV design, supporting architects, engineers, and manufacturers in delivering innovative and cost-effective solar façades. As demand grows for sustainable buildings—especially in countries like Germany, where regulations are tightening—the ability to offer quick, informed, and visually appealing solutions becomes a key competitive advantage.
